The Little Mermaid
Technical & creative lead during the build, stage manager during the run of a large-scale musical production
During the build, the operational link between the creative team and the technical build team; during the run, stage manager over set construction, stage logistics, technical changeovers and multidisciplinary crews, through rehearsals and performances.
Role
During the build I was technical & creative lead: the conduit between the creatives and the technical build team. During the run I became stage manager for the whole run, coordinating set construction, stage logistics and technical changeovers, and directing the crews during rehearsals and performances.
The result
The show
An underwater world on a stage seventy-two metres wide, built from cut-out portals, a continuous LED backwall and constructed set pieces on the floor. What the audience sees as one image is a stack of screen, silhouette and physical set that has to line up again at every changeover.

Responsibility
- Coordination between creative, technical and stage teams
- Set construction and stage logistics
- Technical changeovers during rehearsals and performances
- Leading multidisciplinary crews
Behind the finish
From drawing to auditorium
Stage plans and a numbered prop list with dimensions; every piece gets its size before anything is built.
The cut-out portals are hung in front of the LED back wall.
Portal and screen together; the silhouette decides what is left of the picture.
Constructed scenic pieces are set out on their floor marks.
Behind the set: scaffolding, passageways and storage for everything that has to change between scenes.
Cast waiting in the wings for their entrance; the changeovers run on cue.
